Biography of John Constable, British Landscape Painter
John Constable (June 11, 1776—March 31, 1837) was one of the most prominent British landscape painters of the 1800s. Tied strongly to the Romantic Movement, he embraced the idea of painting directly from nature and introduced scientific detail to his work. He struggled to make ends meet during his lifetime, but today he is recognized as a vital link in the evolution toward impressionism.

East BergholtJohn Constable was born June 11, 1776, in East Bergholt, Suffolk. His father was a wealthy corn merchant. polis was educated at Dedham Grammar School, and after he left school he worked in his father's business. His heart was not in it, however, and in 1799 he induced his father to send him to the Royal Academy in London to study art.
A fellow student at the Royal Academy School was JMW Turner, but the two men never became friends. Constable exhibited his first painting in 1802, but unlike Turner, success eluded him. He sold only 20 paintings in his lifetime, and was never recognized in his homeland while he was alive.
In 1816 polis became financially secure with money left to him when his father died. He married Maria Bicknell despite the opposition of her family. The couple were happy together, and Constable was plunged into depression when she died in 1828.

William George Constable (27 October 1887 – 3 February 1976) was an art historian and gallery director. He was the father of Medieval Historian Giles Constable.
Education
[edit]W. G. Constable was born in Derby. Distantly related to the landscape painter John Constable, he was educated at Derby School, where his father was headmaster, and at St John's College, Cambridge, where he read history, law and economics. In 1909, he was awarded the Whewell Scholarship for International Law. After gaining a First in economics in 1910, he was awarded the McMahon Law Studentship by St John's for four years, then entered the Inner Temple and was called to the Bar in May, 1914.
War Service
[edit]During the First World War, Constable served in the Sherwood Foresters for two years, but he suffered severe shell shock when a shell exploded in a trench a few feet from him, burying him alive. He then spent a long period in a nursing home
