    Kevin Powell is promoting the release of his book, The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood, which was released Tuesday (October 27).

    He sat down with Complex to discuss his relationship with Tupac. As senior writer for VIBE magazine in the 1990s, Powell built a relationship with Tupac and wrote three cover stories on him.

    “I felt like ‘Pac represented really where Hip Hop was, this ung Black male who represented the street side of things, but he also was intellectual,” Powell says about why he was drawn to the West Coast rapper. “This dude had gone to the Baltimore School for the Performing Arts. He was quoting Shakespeare. He could go back and forth. So in an interesting way, ‘Pac was kind of a combination of like Public Enemy and N.W.A, elements of both were happening in him. There wasn’t a lot of folks like that.”

    Kevin Powell (born April 24, 1966) is an American writer, activist, and television personality. He is the author of 14 books, including The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy's Journey into Manhood and When We Free the World published in 2020. Powell was a senior writer during the founding years of Vibe magazine from 1992 to 1996. Powell's activism has focused on ending poverty, advocating for social justice and counteracting violence against women and girls through local, national and international initiatives. He was a Democratic candidate for the United States House of Representatives in Brooklyn, New York, in 2008 and 2010.

    Tupac Biography in the Works

    Hip-hop journalist and political activist Kevin Powell has signed a publishing deal with Simon & Schuster to release a biography on Tupac Shakur.

    The book,aptlytitled Tupac Shakur: The Authorized Biography, has already received the OK from Pac's mother, Afeni Shakur.

    “Kevin Powell is doing this Tupac Shakur biography with my full blessings," she said in a statement. "I trust him and his history of documenting my son’s life, and I know he will do the book from his heart.”

    When talking about his interest in the project, Powell said, “It is an honor to write what will be the definitive biography on the life and times of Tupac Shakur, one of the greatest icons in hip-hop and pop culture history.”

    At press time there was no date on the book’s release.
