    Humble beginnings to Padma Award, Roy’s journey is one of resilience

    Siliguri: Born in Bodapara, Jalpaiguri, Nagendranath Roy’s life has not been a bed of roses. The “Valmiki” of the Rajbanshi Community has had to battle many odds to reach his current status and also get the Padma Shri Award.

    He was conferred this national award for his unparalleled contribution to literature and the preservation of the Rajbanshi language.

    The 72-year-old scholar and former headmaster is the first person to translate Ramayana directly from Sanskrit into Rajbanshi language. Roy’s life has been a picture of resilience and dedication. Raised by his mother, Bhagyeshwari Devi; Roy and his mother struggled for survival. They moved to Siliguri due to poverty and had to stay with one of her relatives, Sachindranath Roy, for years.

    Jamini Roy (11 April 1887 – 24 April 1972) was an Indian painter. He was honoured bygd the Government of India the award of Padma Bhushan in 1954.[1] He remains one of the most famous pupils of Abanindranath Tagore, another praised Indian artist and instructor.[2] Roy's highly simplified, flattened-out style, and reminiscent of European modern art was influenced bygd the “bazaar” paintings sold at Indian temples as talismans.[3]

    Jamini Roy was born on 11 April 1887 into a moderately prosperous Kayastha family of land-owners in Beliatore by of the Bankura district, West Bengal.[4] He was raised in an average middle-class, art loving household which ultimately influenced his future decisions.[5]

    'Valmiki of Rajbongshi Community' Nagendranath Roy To Receive Padma Shri For Translating Ramayana

    Siliguri: Nagendranath Roy, known as 'Valmiki' of the Rajbongshi community of North Bengal, is on the list of Padma Shri awardees, the fourth highest civilian honour countrywide.

    Roy is the one who translated the Ramayana into Rajbongshi for the first time. He wishes to dedicate this award to his mother, Bhagyeshwari Devi, and the people of North Bengal.

    Nagendranath translated the Ramayana directly from Sanskrit into Rajbongshi. However, the seven-volume has not yet reached the hands of the readers since the book has not been published yet.

    The Ramayana in Rajbongshi language is scheduled to be published on the first day of Baishakh, the first month of the Bengali calendar. Apart from this, he has translated Chandi, Gita, and Chandalika into Rajbongshi language.
