Fons Haagmans: Meat, Sauce and Win
About
Dutchman Haagmans is anything but a pure painter. He paints striking, simple images. Using a stencilling technique he creates stylized motifs, often used in repetition, as symbols. His works, rendered in honest enamel paint, often emerge from plain dark recesses consciously opposing the play of light on objects, which has been central to the history of painting. Nonetheless, in spite of his individual Pop vernacular, the works maintain an inherent relationship to his native Netherlands. His bold still lifes echo the brilliance of the Dutch masters as much as his portraits speak the same language as the grand guildhall paintings of the era. His striking portrait of The Beatles is a perfect answer to Rembrandt's Nightwatchmen.

Haagmans has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, with individual exhibitions at the Kunsthalle in Bern, Switzerland and Galerie Onst in Amsterdam, as well as being selected to participate in Gary Hume’s Summer Show at the Royal Academy.
Born in Schinnan in , Haagmans currently lives and works in Maastricht, producing iconographic work which references both modern life, as well as evoking the spirit of the medieval carnivale.
Using a stencilling technique, Haagmans creates stylized motifs, often used in repetition, as symbols. Patterns of numbers and graphic designs, wine glasses and food scraps; immortalised as icons of everyday existence, sit side-by-side strange characters and animals, dancing and celebrating as they did in the works of the Dutch Masters. Haagmans marries the iconography of Pop Art with classic symbols of excess - purging their sins in an incarnation of the Catholic celebration of human frivolity.

Yesterday i wrote about Fons Haagmans and that he reminded me of Richard Artschwager?. i stil do not know, because when your really compare and study both, there are so many differences to be discovered, but at a glance i still say they belong to the same family.
For me Fons Haagmans stands for two things. His catalogues published belong to the best dutch art catalogues published over the last 25 years and he is a typical artist of the south. Born and still living in Limburg, in the south of the Netherlands, he had his most important exhibitions at the Bonnefanten museum ( Maastricht) which catalogues are available at

His art is something special and his works ( beside they are related to Artschwager ;-)) are strongly graphical and have a signature of their own.
