    Gomburza, alternatively stylized as GOMBURZA or GomBurZa ("Gom" for Gómes, "Bur" for Burgos, and "Za" for Zamora),[1] refers to three Filipino Catholicpriests, Mariano Gómes, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, who were executed by a garrote on February 17, , in Bagumbayan, Philippines by Spanish colonial authorities on charges of subversion arising from the Cavite mutiny. The name is a portmanteau of the priests' surnames.

    Gomburza incurred the hatred of Spanish authorities for fighting for equal rights among priests and leading the campaign against the Spanish friars. They fought on the issues of secularization in the Philippines that led to the conflict of religious and church seculars.[2]

    TODAY IN FILIPINO HISTORY — 17 February Catholic priests Mariano Gómez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora were executed by garrote in Bagumbayan (now Rizal Park). The three are collectively known today as GomBurZa, a portmanteau of their last names. The GomBurZa priests were indicted on charges of subversion due to the so-called Cavite Mutiny which happened several days prior (January 20). In the said mutiny, around colonial troops and laborers stationed at the Fort San Felipe (Cavite City) rebelled against their Spanish officers. They were led to believe that their mutiny would turn into a national uprising. However, the mutiny was easily subdued by government troops in a matter of hours.
