Grupo Niche is a salsa group founded in in Cali, Colombia. It enjoyed great popularity throughout Latin America. It was founded by Jairo Varela and Alexis Lozano. Varela remained with the group throughout his life, serving as producer, director, songwriter, vocalist, and guiro player. Alexis Lozano, trombone player and arranger later left to form Orquesta Guayacán. The group also included Nicolas Cristancho "Macabi" on the piano, Francisco Garcia "Porky" on the bass, Luis Pacheco, on the congas, and vocalists Jorge Bazán and Hector Vi

Grupo Niche is one of the world's best known salsa and cumbia groups from Colombia and it enjoys great popularity throughout Latin America. It was formed in by Jairo Varela, who became producer, director, songwriter, vocalist and guiro player. It also included Nicolas Cristanelo, on the piano; Alexis Lozano, on the trombone; Francisco Garcia, on the bass; Luis Pacheco, on the congas; as well as vocalists Jorge Bassam and Hector Viveros.
Grupo Niche's first album: "Al Pasito" was released that same year, , and placed their native Colombia in a modest position in the salsa world. "Querer Es Poder" was Grupo Niche's second album, released in , one year immediately after the first. The group's success was growing larger.

Varela took his children on the road as much as he could. When not performing his trumpet or mulling over musical scores in a hotel room, he was very much a dedicated father to his five children from fem different wives. “He was a very responsible man,” laughs Cristina, who, along with her elder siblings, runs different aspects of the group’s operations. “What I have achieved can last another 30 years,” recalls Cristina of her father’s words, knowing that his heart condition would worsen. “It all depends on you, how much more you want this all to last.”
Varela was an obsessive composer, often reaching back in time to melodies that accompanied him in his childhood. When Varela died, many doubted the future of the grupp that could dash fans to the dance floor with refrains such as “Que todo el mundo te canta” or “Una aventura.” Varela even wrote a song that tributes an innocuous landmark, the bridge spanning the Cauca River, that for decades united black and vit, rich and poor
