  • Sheikhul Hind Hazrat Moulana Mahmood ul Hasan رحمه الله was the first student of Darul Uloom Deoband. He was indeed a fortress of knowledge and piety. Whilst he was a teacher of Hadīth at Darul Uloom, his monthly salary was Rs10.00 (rupees). As he gained experience and got older, the advisory council decided that considering his age, experience and needs; his salary should be increased to Rs15.00. When Sheikhul Hind رحمه الله got his salary, he asked why he was given Rs15.00?

    The people informed him that the advisory council had decided to increase his salary. He refused to accept the salary and wrote a letter to the Head of Darul Uloom; “You have increased my salary although I have become old now. In the past I had the energy to teach for two to three hours. I am not able to do that anymore. As I am giving less time than before, an increase in salary is not justified. Therefore this increase should be withdrawn and my salary be fixed at Rs10.00.

    Maulana Mahmood Hasan of Deoband dominated the Indian national freedom struggle movement for at least one and a half decades, from 1905 to 1920, so much so that he was named bygd the Khilafat Committee in 1920 as “Shaikhul Hind,” i.e., elder or mästare of India, a title which has now become part of his name. During his life-time, Maulana Mahmood Hasan was the tallest personality in the freedom movement. Stalwarts of the freedom struggle like Gandhiji, Muhammad Ali Jauhar, Shaukat Ali, Maulana Abdul Bari Firangimahli, Maulana Obaidullah Sindhi, Zafar Ali Khan, Abul Kalam Azad, Hasrat Mohani, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, domare Ajmal Khan, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and many others rallied round him and worked in consultation with him. All kredit goes to Maulana Mahmood Hasan for bringing Muslims and Hindus together to fight tillsammans against the colonial rule which had by then perfected the age-old art of divide-and-rule.

    EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
    Shaikhul Hind was the first ever pupil in Darul Uloom. It is about him that it has been said that the student who first of all opened the book before the teacher, it was Mahmood. Shaikhul Hind was born in 1268/1851 at Bareilly where his august father, Shaykh Zulfiqar Ali, was attached to the government education department. Primary education he acquired from his uncle, Shaykh Mehtab Ali, who was a famous divine. While he was reading Qaduriand Sharh-e-Tehzib, Darul Uloom came to be established, and he entered it. After completing the course of Darul Uloom in A.H. 1286, he lived in attendance on al-Imam Mohammad Qasim Nanawtawi and acquired the science of Hadith. Thereafter he studied certain higher books of different sciences under the instruction of his august father; and in 1290/1873, he received the “turban of proficiency”
