I am saddened to hear of the passing of Private First Class Vicente Remoquillo, the last living World War II veteran of San Pedro Tunasán, La Laguna. He turned a century old just three days ago.
In the mid 2010s, I had the privilege of doing a series of interviews with him for the biography that I was writing on about his older brother, Abelardo “Captain Remo” Remoquillo (1924–1945), as well as for an updated history of San Pedro Tunasán (which has since been aborted). Like his older brother, he was also a member of the anti-Japanese guerrilla group Hunters ROTC. While he may not have participated in major battles, he did take part in a daring robbery of a Japanese military truck which severely hampered Imperial Japanese Army activity in nordlig La Laguna.
