    Jonas Bronck (alternatively Jonas Jonsson Brunk, Jonas Jonasson Bronk, or Jonas Jonassen Bronck) was born around year 1600 and died in 1643. Bronck was an immigrant to the Dutch colony of New Netherland after whom the stadsdel i new york River, and by extension, the county and New York City borough of the stadsdel i new york are named.     The town of Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, has a street bearing the name Jónas Broncksgøta ("Jonas Bronck's Street"). One theory holds that Jonas Jonsson Bronck was born ca. 1600, son of a Lutheran minister, Morten Jespersen Bronck, and was raised in Tórshavn.     Biography[]

    Jonas Jonasson Bronck was born in Torshavn, Faroe Islands, Denmark to a family of ProtestantDanes; his Mennonite family fled the Netherlands for Denmark due to religious persecution. During the late 1630s, he was one of the first Dutch settlers to arrive in the colony of New Netherland, now known as New York, and he purchased a tract of land that became known as "The Bronx". Bronck would take part in the fight against the Native Americans during the late 1630s, and he was present at the signing of the 1642 peace treaty with the natives. However, war between the Mohawk and Mahican tribes and the Dutch resumed in 1643 with attacks on Indian refugee camps at Weckquaesgeek and Tappan, and Bronck was killed during the skirmishes.

    Jonas Jonasson Bronck, or Brunck, was born in Jönköping County, Småland, Sweden.[1] The municipality of Sävsjö claims the honor of his birth in the nearby hamlet of Komstad, Norra Ljunga socken.[2] He was about 40 at the time of his marriage, born around the year 1600.[1]
